Design Brand Michael-Cleary Purchases Minton-Spidell
Design industry veteran Matthew Costigan and Richard Trenz, co-owners of multi-line trade showroom Michael-Cleary announced that they have purchased Los Angeles-based furniture manufacturer Minton-Spidell, in a move that brings together two classic American design companies with a shared aesthetic. The brands will remain separate, and new product introductions from Minton-Spidell are expected to debut this spring. The brand’s new website is live, featuring a complete redesign with an updated user interface and product display.
Founded by Bob Minton and Mo Spidell in 1969, Minton-Spidell is known for their specialized finishes and high-quality furniture reproductions. Made in Culver City, California, the collection is carried in 12 US markets and ranges from dining and lounge chairs, bar stools to casegoods, upholstered seating, lighting and mirrors. Production will remain in Los Angeles, says Costigan, who plans to expand into new categories, including bed frames and further develop offerings like chairs and bed side tables.
“Having the chance to carry on the Minton-Spidell tradition of quality while bringing my own imagination and vision to the line is beyond my wildest dreams,” says Costigan, who purchased the company after the original business partners had passed or retired.
With showrooms in Washington, DC and Chicago, Michael-Cleary has been an essential source for design professionals for half a century. The company has represented Minton-Spidell for 30 years and this new acquisition cements the relationship. “I couldn’t be more excited to be leading Minton-Spidell into our next 50 years,” says Costigan, “I truly believe we produce some of the finest furniture on the market today. I have worked in the design industry for 25 years and have an extremely good sense of our designers’ expectations. Minton-Spidell is a classic American made furniture company with timeless design and beauty.”
